Half of the 20 most commonly prescribed medications taken by older adults may raise the risk of falls, according to new research. Painkillers and antidepressants were most strongly tied to a greater likelihood of being injured in a fall, the study of 64,000 Swedes over age 65 found. Severe injuries were significantly more common with 11 out of the 20 medications studied.

Their chattering and bouncing reminded me that although visiting a nursing care facility can feel unnatural if you’re not used to it, in some ways nothing could be more natural than what sometimes happens when life at either end of the spectrum connects.

But hovering over the incident is her knowledge that she has an elevated genetic risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Getting a flu shot could help protect against a heart attack, Australian researchers say. Their new study found that hospitalized heart attack patients were about half as likely to have received a flu vaccination and about twice as likely to have gotten sick with the flu as people living in the same city who had not suffered a heart attack, leading them to conclude that flu shots might shield against heart attacks.
